BURUNDI - GIKU (WASHED)
The Kayanza Province is home to thousands of very small scale coffee farming families and few quality and fair Washing Stations (WS). This microlot is built from coffee grown on Giku Hill, where farmers normally travel with their harvested cherries for up to 3 hours by foot to the nearest washing station. Long Miles Coffee have built Ninga WS (their third) nearby to Giku Hill, improving accessibility for these farmer’s to deliver fresh coffee cherries during the harvest. On arrival at Ninga WS, cherries are floated and hand sorted to ensure only the ripest cherries are processed for micro lots. This particular lot was pulped to remove the cherry skin and fruit before a fermentation in concrete tanks, before ‘washing’ in grading channels and slow drying on raised beds. This coffee brings a deep, sweet body with notes of Plum, Apple and Maple Syrup.
