Perfect Your Plunger Brew

A plunger is one of the easiest ways to make a full, rich coffee at home. Use the guide below as a starting point, then adjust the recipe to suit your taste.

Coffee: Espresso Roast
Dose: 30 g
Water: 550 ml
Grind: Coarse
Brew Time: 4:00

Tip: Double the quantities if you are brewing a larger batch.

Step 1: Grind the coffee

Grind on a coarse setting. On a scale of 1 to 10, aim for 9 or 10, with 1 being the finest and 10 the coarsest.

Every grinder behaves a little differently, so you may need to adjust slightly.

Step 2: Add the coffee

Add the ground coffee to the bottom of a clean, dry plunger.

Step 3: Add hot water

Pour about 200 ml of hot water at around 95°C, just enough to fully saturate the coffee. Stir quickly to make sure all the grounds are wet.

Then add the remaining water until you reach 500 ml total. For accuracy, use a scale and measure in grams.

Place the lid and filter on top of the plunger to retain heat, but do not press yet.

Step 4: Press

At 4 minutes, press the plunger down slowly and steadily. If there is resistance, support the plunger with your other hand.

Press until the filter reaches the bottom and the grounds are fully compressed.

Step 5: Pour and adjust

Pour into your cup and taste.

Espresso Roast gives a bold, heavier cup and works well with milk or a little hot water if you prefer a lighter strength.

If you want a brighter, lighter cup, try the same recipe with a Filter Roast.
